Mystery and Thriller novels: Five must reads in October!

Fall really is one of the best times to read!

Fall is officially in full swing! That means holiday season is right around the corner.

There is not better time to begin the annual tradition of cozying up with warm beverage and book. In honor of this time of the year, I wanted to curate a list of some of my favorite books that are perfect for each individual holiday.

First up, is October! I don’t think it’s an unpopular opinion to claim October is one of the best months. It’s the month dedicated to the supernatural and the time where ghouls and goblins reign supreme. It’s also a time where I enjoy being on the edge of my seat.

For this reason, I actively seek out mystery and thriller books during October.

Here are five of my favorite books during the spooky season:

1. Salem’s Lot by Stephen King

To be honest, I think this entire list could be composed of Stephen King books. And if I did that, I don’t think anybody would even think twice about it! He’s an expert at writing novels that are perfect for people interested in having a spooky reading experience.

So I narrowed King’s contribution to this list down to one book, Salem’s Lot. While this may not be my favorite novel out of King’s collection, who doesn’t love a vampire story during Halloween time?

2. House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski

House of Leaves has remained one of the most memorable books which I’ve read. While marketed as a horror novel, this book accomplishes much beyond its genre. In fact, it’s argued this book isn’t even a horror story at all, but rather, a love story.

For me, the strengths of this story propagate from its unorthodox writing style. If you’re a fan of unique artistic styles, this is a must read during the spooky season!

3. The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

The Picture of Dorian Gray is a novel that explores a timeless temptation. One that has plagued humans since the beginning of time. Can someone obtain the ability of maintaining their youth?

In a story that has it all, this novel is a great read for anyone looking to read a classic.

4. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

Quite possibly the most recognizable creature of Halloween time, is none other than Frankenstein! (Which is silly in itself, because the creature that’s labeled as Frankenstein these days, isn’t even the true Frankenstein in the novel)

Frankenstein is a novel that explores the purposes of the journey we call life. It looks at the reasons we were even chosen to partake in this rat race of life in the first place.

5. The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie

The queen of detective and mystery novels herself, Agatha Christie, deserves a spot on this list!

Much like with Stephen King, it’s incredibly difficult to pick just one Christie novel. I decided to go with my favorite in The Murder of Roger Ackroyd.

It’s a story that perfectly strings along its plot and it leaves the reader on the edge of their seat. I’d be impressed if many are able to solve the mystery before the protagonist, Hercule Poirot, is able to… I certainly didn’t!

Let me know if you’re planning on reading any of these books! Stay tuned for my list on my favorite books for November! I hope everyone has a great October!
